Elected full member of the RBSA - April 2008
Following the recent Candidates Exhibition, Carole was successfully elected to a Full Member of the RBSA. Six of her latest paintings of Ireland were selected with the help and guidance of Brian Fletcher and Graham Blaine.
The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists is one of the oldest Art Societies in the UK. As early as 1807, Samuel Lines opened an Academy teaching students, several of whom became famous in the art world. Having purchased Dakota House in St. Paul's Square, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists now displays the best of Midlands' Artists and Craftsmen.
?Since becoming an Associate Member in 2003 Carole actively promoted the Society at every opportunity particularly through her website. She participates in as many of the Open / Prize / Members and Associates Exhibitions as possibile and trys to attend all of the Preview Evenings.
At her solo exhibiton in the Craft Gallery in January 2008, she held a painting demonstration over one weekend and sent out 450 invitations promoting the event. This brought in a number of people on both days who re-arranged the furniture in the gallery to enable them to sit and watch the whole demonstration!
In 2006 and 2007 Carole ran one of the Professional Development Seminars – ‘Shout About It’, a seminar on how to market yourself as an artist. The Society’s involvement in the project helped in raising their profile with Birmingham City Council and Arts Council which was of great benefit to the RBSA.
New Inspiration!
Carole's next painting trip is to the Isles of Scily in October... for the peace and serenity, the sunlight, the wild flowers, the birds, beaches and rock pools... watch this space!
Carole says.... "Then in 2009, I am embarking on an epic journey to Asia, Australia and New Zealand ... sketching, photographing and painting along the way. Out of this journey will come a major body of expressive and innovative paintings.
Artist Demonstration – Wednesday 30 January
Carole regularly holds artist demonstrations for art clubs and societies all over the Midlands but this was the first time she held one in Lichfield ... there was a good turnout. The audience, who were made up of art buyers, amateur artists and general public with an interest in art, was lively, asked lots of questions and made the evening a pleasant one.
Carole chose to paint a seascape of Achill Island from her Ireland trip last September. From her sketches and composiitonal plans, working on 3mm mdf primed with 3 coats of white emulsion both sides, she began painting on a base colour of cadmium red. Using a limited palette of Prussian Blue, Cobolt Blue, Indian Yellow and Burnt Sienna, Carole worked on the painting as a whole, blocking in colours, working boldly and building up the layers.
Version 1 below left, is the point at which the demonstration ended and it was time for her to leave the painting and come back to it fresh the next day.
Version 2 is the finished painting – 'A Sea Breeze, Achill Island' – a fresh approach the next day allowed her to fill in the gaps and add details, making small adjustments to enhance the composiiton and add greater definition.
And of course, when the painting was dropped into it's frame... it made all the difference. This painting will be on show at the Spring Exhibition in the Corridor Gallery,
Guild Hall, Lichfield on 4-6 April 2008. The next demonstration in Lichfield is on Thursday 17 April 2008 7–9pm – please call 01543 676895 to book a place. |
