As pomised, here is the final result... version 1 was as the painitng was left on the evening. 'Waves Howl, Bryher'' on the right, is the finished version. Carole has worked into the painting overall with the brush, added more detail around the rocks and forground and lightened the sky slightly.

You can see ths painting in Carole's 'Through the Window' solo exhibition at Burton Library until May 2.

More good news on the calendar front...

Allen and Bertram, the calendar makers have chosen 'The Sea Awakes' (the painting featured below for the painting demo in September) for their 2011 Academy Calendar.
(April 2009)

Painting Demonstration – Thursday 11 September
Carole regularly holds painting demonstrations for art clubs and societies all over the Midlands and also organises a few of her own throughout the year in Lichfield.

Thursday 11th saw a good crowd show who were made up of art buyers, amateur artists and general public with an interest in art. It was a lively session with lots of questions asked.

Carole chose to paint a seascape as part of her latest project... 'Shoreline Series 1' which is inspired by her travels abroad and in the UK. From her sketches and compositional plans she worked on 3mm mdf primed with 3 coats of white emulsion and gesso both sides. She worked in broad strokes, blocking in colour and gradually building up the layers. Techniques such as spattering with a bristle fan brush were used and an impasto paint was applied in the foreground which she drew into with the end of a brush.

As promised, Carole has posted the painting as it looked at the end of the evening... Version 1 below left, the point at which the demonstration ended and it was time for her to leave the painting and come back to it fresh the next day.

Version 2 is the finished painting – 'The Sea Awakes' – with a fresh approach the next day Carole added more definition to the multi-coloured pebbles on the beach and made other small adjustments to enhance the composiiton. She also added some acrylic ink applied directly from the dropper in complimentary colours.

And of course, when the painting was dropped into it's frame... it made all the difference. This painting, together with the whole brand new collection of Shoreline Series 1, will be on show for the first time at the Staffordshire Open Studios Event in the Corridor Gallery, Guild Hall, Lichfield on Friday 26 - Sunday 28 September.

The next demonstration is Thursday 16 Aprll 2009. To reserve your place call Carole on 01543 676895

Elected full member of the RBSA - April 2008

Following the recent Candidates Exhibition, Carole was successfully elected to a Full Member of the RBSA. Six of her latest paintings of Ireland were selected with the help and guidance of Brian Fletcher and Graham Blaine.

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists is one of the oldest Art Societies in the UK. As early as 1807, Samuel Lines opened an Academy teaching students, several of whom became famous in the art world. Having purchased Dakota House in St. Paul's Square, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists now displays the best of Midlands' Artists and Craftsmen.

?Since becoming an Associate Member in 2003 Carole actively promoted the Society at every opportunity particularly through her website. She participates in as many of the Open / Prize / Members and Associates Exhibitions as possibile and trys to attend all of the Preview Evenings.

At her solo exhibiton in the Craft Gallery in January 2008, she held a painting demonstration over one weekend and sent out 450 invitations promoting the event. This brought in a number of people on both days who re-arranged the furniture in the gallery to enable them to sit and watch the whole demonstration!

In 2006 and 2007 Carole ran one of the Professional Development Seminars – ‘Shout About It’, a seminar on how to market yourself as an artist. The Society’s involvement in the project helped in raising their profile with Birmingham City Council and Arts Council which was of great benefit to the RBSA.

New Inspiration!
Carole's next painting trip is to the Isles of Scily in October... for the peace and serenity, the sunlight, the wild flowers, the birds, beaches and rock pools... watch this space!

Carole says.... "Then in 2009, I am embarking on an epic journey to Asia, Australia and New Zealand ... sketching, photographing and painting along the way. Out of this journey will come a major body of expressive and innovative paintings.

Artist Demonstration – Wednesday 30 January
Carole regularly holds artist demonstrations for art clubs and societies all over the Midlands but this was the first time she held one in Lichfield ... there was a good turnout. The audience, who were made up of art buyers, amateur artists and general public with an interest in art, was lively, asked lots of questions and made the evening a pleasant one.

Carole chose to paint a seascape of Achill Island from her Ireland trip last September. From her sketches and composiitonal plans, working on 3mm mdf primed with 3 coats of white emulsion both sides, she began painting on a base colour of cadmium red. Using a limited palette of Prussian Blue, Cobolt Blue, Indian Yellow and Burnt Sienna, Carole worked on the painting as a whole, blocking in colours, working boldly and building up the layers.

Version 1 below left, is the point at which the demonstration ended and it was time for her to leave the painting and come back to it fresh the next day.

Version 2 is the finished painting – 'A Sea Breeze, Achill Island' – a fresh approach the next day allowed her to fill in the gaps and add details, making small adjustments to enhance the composiiton and add greater definition.

And of course, when the painting was dropped into it's frame... it made all the difference. This painting will be on show at the Spring Exhibition in the Corridor Gallery,
Guild Hall, Lichfield on 4-6 April 2008.

The next demonstration in Lichfield is on Thursday 17 April 2008 7–9pm – please call 01543 676895 to book a place.

New work for 2008

– Tour of Ireland

Carole spent a week touring Ireland in September 2007 with her sketch book and camera gathering lots of new source material in readiness for her next project. She visited Achill Island on the west coast, Westport, Galway, the Dingle Penninsula, the Ring of Kerry and finally Kinsale. It was a whistle stop tour but one that gave her a clear feeling for the place and where she would like to spend more time in the future.

Her Irish work can be viewed online (click on Gallery One - Ireland) and will be on show at the Spring Exhibition in the Corridor Gallery, Lichfield and the RBSA, both in April. It was also featured in Art of England magazine in June 2008.

Now showing at Artifex Gallery
A selection of Carole's work can be seen at Artifex Gallery, Mitchell Centre for Art and Craft, Weeford Road, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B75 6NA.

'Go With the Clouds'
Acrylic on box canvas

"My affinity with the countryside leaves me with no lack of inspiration when it comes to painting. I spend many hours walking and sketching which helps me to capture the atmosphere and feeling of a place. The day I sketched this view of Lake Windermere from the spectacular viewpoint of Gummers How, the rain was starting to ease and the low cloud began to reveal the autumnal colours and textures. I used broad brush strokes, built up layers of paint and created a painterly effect using an impasto technique where the paint comes out of the canvas."

'Fuscia Hedgerows'
Acrylic on board

?"After a week spent touring Ireland with my sketch book and camera gathering new source material, I was enveloped by the mood and atmosphere of the place. The wild flowers including fuscias which grew along the roadside and in the hedgerows, inspired this painting. Back in the studio, I began with a Carmin Red background and built up the painting in many layers giving it texture and depth, creating an emotional response to the subject. I like areas of my work to be fairly ambiguous – to make the viewer do some work and use their imagination."
