“One Step Closer” is a mixed media painting created using a combination of newsprint collage and acrylics. I begin the process by selecting pieces of newsprint that I’ve collected over time—quirky words or snippets that catch my eye and feel right for the subject. I tear the paper and arrange it onto the canvas, guided by an initial compositional plan.
Once the collage is in place, I carefully begin painting into and around it, making early decisions about which pieces of text or imagery I want to remain visible. These chosen fragments become an integral part of the finished work, helping to shape its mood and meaning.
I’m really pleased with how this piece came together. It has a strong presence, and I love watching people engage with it at exhibitions. I truly feel it deserves a happy home.
